Questions

Good to know.

How do I get a colour palette from an image?
  1. Drop a picture on the page, paste one, or choose a file.
  2. The tool finds its main colours straight away. Use the plus and minus buttons to show from 3 to 10.
  3. Click any colour to copy it as a hex, RGB or HSL code, or use Copy All for the whole palette.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. Your browser reads the colours itself, so the picture never leaves your device and nothing is stored. Close the tab and it is gone.
How are the colours chosen?
The picture is shrunk to 64 by 64 pixels and every pixel is sorted into one of 4,096 colour groups. The most common groups come first, and any group too close to a colour already picked is skipped, so the colours you get are as different from each other as the picture allows. Each colour is the average of the pixels in its group, read with your browser's own canvas.
Can I pick a single colour from the picture?
Yes. Click anywhere on the picture and the colour of that spot is picked and copied. The Image Colour Picker is built for exactly this.
Which images can I use?
Almost any picture your browser can open, including JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF, and screenshots pasted straight from your clipboard. Transparent areas are ignored, so a logo on a clear background gives you the logo's own colours.
Is it free?
Yes. There is no signup and no limit on how many pictures you check.
Can Muse do this for every image I save?
Yes. Muse, our Mac app, works out up to five main colours of each image you save, in the background on your Mac. Hover any card and click a colour dot to copy it, or search your library by a colour name. It is free for 14 days, then $29 once.
