Screenshotting a colour combination takes two seconds. Using it later rarely happens. A folder of clipped palettes and swatches on most Macs sits mostly unopened, because a swatch on its own does not carry enough information to be useful six months on.
The usual habit is to lift a palette down to five hex codes and throw the source image away. That is exactly backwards. Colour is relational: how a shade reads depends on how much of it there is, what light and material it appeared in, and what sat next to it. Strip all three away and you are left with five accurate, useless colours.
Here is a method that keeps the parts that actually matter, plus the tools already on a Mac for grabbing a colour from anywhere on screen.
Why does a saved palette look dead the moment you use it?
Five equal-width colour bars imply five colours of equal weight, and almost no real image works that way. A room that reads as warm and calm might be eighty percent off-white wall, a slice of tan linen, and one small object in a deep rust that gives the whole thing its character. Reduce that to five same-size swatches and the rust takes up a fifth of the palette instead of a twentieth, and the balance that made it feel calm is gone.
Light does the same damage. A colour photographed under warm tungsten light or in golden-hour sun reads differently from the same pigment under an overcast sky or a fluorescent office. A palette tool extracts the pixel values it sees, not the light that produced them, so two genuinely different materials can hand back an almost identical hex code, and the same material photographed twice can hand back two different ones.
And a colour only ever means something next to another colour. A muted sage looks entirely different against charcoal than it does against cream. Pull it out on its own and you have kept the least useful part of what you saw.
How do you grab a colour from anywhere on your screen?
macOS has two built-in tools for this, and neither needs installing anything.
- Digital Colour Meter is a small utility in Applications > Utilities. Move the pointer over any pixel on screen and it reads the colour value live, in whatever colour space you pick from its menu. Apple's own guide covers the aperture slider, which lets you sample a single pixel or average a small area, and the shortcuts for copying a sampled value as text or as an image.
- The eyedropper inside macOS's own colour picker shows up wherever an app lets you choose a custom colour, including Preview's markup tools. Click the colour well to open the panel, click the eyedropper icon, and the cursor becomes a loupe you can move over any pixel on screen, in any app, and click to pick it up.
Either tool gives you an accurate value fast. Neither one, on its own, tells you why the colour worked. That is the note-taking step below.
Write down where it came from, and the light it was in
The single habit that makes a colour reference useful later is recording where it came from. A line as short as "hotel lobby, late afternoon, brass fittings" tells you more, a year on, than the hex code ever will, because it names the material and the light that produced it. Try to reproduce that exact tone under office lighting and it will look wrong, and knowing why saves you from blaming the colour.
Proportion belongs in the same note. If the source was a room, a spread, or a product shot, jot down roughly how much of each colour was present and where it sat: a line as short as "70% warm white, 25% tan, 5% rust accent" turns a flat list of hex codes back into something you can actually rebuild.
Organise by feeling, not by hue
Sorting a colour library by hue is the natural instinct and the wrong one. Nobody searches their own reference library for "blue". They search for a mood: warm neutrals, high-contrast editorial, a muted period palette, the specific unsettled green a client keeps calling sad. A structure built around feeling and use survives contact with an actual brief. One built around hue just makes you scroll past forty blues looking for the one that felt right.
This does not need special software. Folder names like "warm-neutrals", "high-contrast-editorial" and "muted-period" work as well as tags in any dedicated tool, because the categorising is doing the real work, not the app holding it. The same principle carries over if what you are actually saving is typefaces rather than colour: naming a reference by what it is for beats sorting it by a superficial trait every time.
The free method, properly
None of this requires buying anything. A folder of source images, kept whole rather than cropped down to a swatch strip, plus a plain text file in the same folder with one line per image (where it is from, the light, rough proportions) is a genuinely complete system. It costs nothing, it opens on any machine, and it keeps the exact information a five-swatch export throws away.
The only discipline it asks for is writing the note at the moment you save the image, before the context leaves your head. Do that consistently and the folder holds up for years.
