The warning is blunt: your disk is almost full. The number attached to it is not. macOS tells you space is short without telling you what is eating it, and for a lot of people the honest answer is images: years of screenshots, a Downloads folder nobody has opened since 2023, a Photos library that quietly grew past a sensible size. None of that shows up as one obvious pile. It is spread across five or six places, and clearing it safely means knowing which of those are genuinely disposable and which one, Photos, has a setting that can remove things you actually wanted to keep.
Where did all this space actually go?
Start with the real number rather than a guess. Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, then click General and Storage. macOS calculates a coloured bar broken down by category, apps, documents, photos, messages, system data, and lists its own recommendations underneath for reclaiming space. - Open System Settings from the Apple menu.
- Click General, then Storage. Give the bar a moment. It scans the whole disk before it can show a figure.
- Read the coloured segments under the bar rather than just the total. Photos, Messages and system data are usually where an image pile actually lives.
- Scroll to the recommendations below the bar and open each one. Apple only shows a recommendation when it has found something specific it can act on.
The recommendations panel is worth reading properly rather than clicking through on autopilot. It typically offers to keep Desktop and Documents content in iCloud, empty the Trash automatically after 30 days, and clear things such as watched Apple TV downloads. The places an image pile actually hides
- Downloads. Every image saved from a browser, an email or a chat app lands here by default, often as a .webp file that will not open the same way a JPEG does, and nothing in macOS clears it automatically. It is usually the single largest folder nobody has opened in a year.
- Desktop. The default save location for every screenshot, so a habit of a few a day turns into thousands of PNG files sitting in the one folder you look at every time you open a new Finder window.
- The Photos library. One file, Photos Library.photoslibrary under Pictures, that can run into tens or hundreds of gigabytes once videos and Live Photos are counted, whether or not you ever actually open the app.
- Messages attachments. Every photo and video sent or received in Messages saves locally by default, and a group chat that has been running for a couple of years can quietly hold gigabytes nobody would think to check there.
- Browser caches. Safari, Chrome and Firefox each keep their own private stash of images from every page you visit, refreshed constantly and rarely worth keeping on purpose, and it adds up faster with more than one browser installed.
What does Optimise Mac Storage in Photos actually do?
Turn on iCloud Photos in Photos settings, then select Optimise Mac Storage, and it does what it says: it keeps a smaller, screen-resolution version of each photo on your Mac and stores the full-size original in iCloud, downloading that original back down automatically the moment you open, edit or export the photo. Apple's own guide to optimising storage in Photos on Mac describes exactly this trade, and it does not delete anything on its own while it is switched on.
This is the point where people actually lose photos, so it is worth being precise about it. The risk sits in turning the setting off, not in turning it on. Apple's own instructions for turning off iCloud Photos describe a straight choice: download everything back to full resolution first, or select Remove from Mac and lose the local copies that were never fully there to begin with. Apple states plainly that if you skip the download step, optimised photos are not the original resolution, which is the exact moment people mean when they say Photos deleted their pictures. It did not delete anything from iCloud. It removed the only copy that existed on the Mac itself. Apple's own instructions for turning off iCloud Photos lay out that choice in full.
Optimise Mac Storage only changes what is kept on this Mac. Every original still lives in iCloud, and it still counts toward your iCloud storage plan, free or paid, no matter how little space Photos is using locally. Freeing up your Mac and freeing up iCloud are two separate jobs, and this setting only does the first one.
Emptying Trash, and Photos' own 30-day trash
Two separate bins on a Mac hold onto space for longer than most people expect. Dragging a file to the Finder Trash does not free anything until the Trash is actually emptied, and Storage settings can be told to do that automatically for anything older than 30 days rather than relying on you to remember. Deleting a photo inside the Photos app works differently: it does not go to the Finder Trash at all. It moves to a separate Recently Deleted album inside Photos, described in Apple's guide to deleting and recovering photos on Mac, and stays recoverable there for 30 days before it is gone for good. Delete a thousand photos and check Storage that same afternoon, and the number will often barely move, because Photos is still holding onto every one of them on purpose.
Why the pile keeps coming back
Clearing the five places above buys back space today, but it does not answer why the pile forms in the first place. A Downloads folder or a Photos library is, by its nature, a list. Nobody opens a folder of six thousand files and looks through what is actually in it, so nobody ever decides what to keep, and a collection you cannot see is a collection you never prune. That is really the whole mechanism behind a Mac quietly filling up with images over a couple of years: not one giant file, but thousands of small ones nobody ever looked at long enough to judge.
Muse exists for that part of the problem. It is a Mac app that turns a scattered pile of images, screenshots and saved links into a grid you can actually look at, so keeping or deleting something becomes a glance rather than an open, close, open loop through Preview. Worth being upfront about how it stores things, since this is a post about disk space: Muse copies whatever you save into its own library folder, the same approach Eagle takes, rather than leaving files exactly where they started. Importing a folder of a thousand images into Muse means a second copy of those thousand images exists on the same disk until you go back and delete the originals yourself, so it is not a shortcut around a storage problem on day one. What it solves is the pile that keeps refilling, because the library becomes something you actually browse and cull rather than something you avoid opening. Muse's library is also a plain folder on disk, not a locked database, and Export My Library writes any collection back out as ordinary files whenever you want. That matters the day the whole thing genuinely outgrows your Mac's drive: move the library folder to an external disk, point Muse at it, and keep going from there instead of starting over.
