A UI micro-interaction, a title sequence, a camera move: motion reference is the part of a collection that never quite finds a home. Saving a still is instant, right click, save image, done. Saving a moving image usually is not, so it survives as an open browser tab, a screen recording buried in Downloads, or a link forwarded to yourself and never opened again.
That gap matters because motion reference is often the hardest part of a brief to describe in words later. You remember the easing on a button, not what it was called.
Why does motion reference end up somewhere else?
Ask someone how they save an interesting animation and the honest answer is usually macOS's own screen recorder, Cmd+Shift+5, pointed at whatever just played on screen. That produces a plain .mov file named something like "Screen Recording 2026-08-05 at 14.32.11.mov", which then lands wherever the last save dialog pointed: the Desktop, Downloads, or a folder called "inspo" that already holds forty other files with names just as opaque.
A still image gets dragged into a moodboard app or a folder without much thought. A video clip gets left where it fell, because there was never an obvious next step for it, and every day it sits there makes it a little more likely to be forgotten.
What Finder and Quick Look actually give you
The free native answer is better than it gets credit for. Select a video in Finder's icon view and hover, and a scrub bar appears so you can drag through the clip without opening it. Press the space bar on a selected file and Quick Look opens a full preview, play button included, without launching a separate app.
That is fine for one clip. It stops being fine at the point a real reference collection reaches: a few dozen clips saved over a few months, sitting in the same folder as PNGs and PDFs. Finder shows whichever frame it picked as a thumbnail, not the frame you actually remember, so recognising the right clip means scrubbing through several candidates rather than scanning a grid the way you would with stills. Quick Look opens one file at a time too. There is no way to lay ten clips out and compare the frame that matters across all of them at once.
What does a library actually need to hold motion well?
Two things, and neither is exotic. First, a grid where the frame you remember is actually visible, sitting next to the stills it belongs with rather than off in a separate video app or a folder of its own. Second, the ability to search for a clip the same way you search for anything else in the collection, by a word in its title or tag, not by remembering its filename.
Muse treats video and GIFs as one of the things it holds, alongside images and screenshots, web links, PDFs and notes. Everything sits in the same card grid or list, and a per view filter lets you show only video and GIFs when that is what you are hunting for. Press space on a clip and it stages large over a blurred backdrop, press space again and it fills the screen, and the video keeps playing through both. Video and images are tagged automatically by Apple's own on device Vision, so a clip you never labelled by hand is still findable later by whatever it actually shows.
None of that requires choosing between a video tool and an image tool. The same collection that holds a competitor's screenshot can hold the fifteen second clip of their onboarding animation, filed right next to it, found by the same search box.
When the video lives on someone else's site
Not every clip worth keeping can be saved as a file. An embedded player on a Dribbble shot, a Vimeo showreel, a YouTube demo: these only give you a page, not a download. The honest move is to save the page as a link, not to pretend you have captured the video itself.
Muse's browser extension offers both: a direct save for a video file sitting on a page, and a save link option for everything else, including embedded players. A saved link becomes a visual bookmark card in Muse, carrying the site's own preview image, the page title cleaned up, and its favicon, fetched once and kept.
Worth being plain about the limit here. Muse does not archive the page behind a saved link, and it cannot stop that link from going dead. If the source ever disappears, what survives in your library is the preview image, the title, and whatever tags and note you added, not the video itself. That is the honest tradeoff of saving a link instead of a file, in any tool, not a gap specific to Muse.
How Muse handles video and GIFs, in practice
Getting a clip in works the same as everything else. Drag a .mov or .gif from Finder onto Muse and a radial dial opens at the cursor so you can drop it straight onto a collection. The Web Clipper's right click menu offers Save Video and Save Link, depending on what the page actually gives you. Duplicates are caught by file hash on the way in, so saving the same clip twice just merges quietly instead of cluttering the grid.
Once it is in, a clip can belong to more than one collection at the same time, the UI reference board and the general swipe file, without copying the file or picking one correct home for it. That matters more for motion than for stills, because a single interesting animation is often the answer to two different questions at once: how did they build this, and what does good timing actually look like.
None of this is unique to paid software. Finder and Quick Look will always be there, free, and they remain the right choice for a handful of clips. The point where a proper library earns its place is volume: the fortieth clip is exactly as easy to find as the first, because you are searching a grid instead of scrubbing a folder.
