Best time to call India from the USA

By the Atlas team · 3 June 2026 · 5 min read

India is half a day ahead of the US, so the trick is simple: call early in your morning and you'll catch India in the evening. Here are the exact windows for the East, Central and West coasts, plus the daylight-saving catch.

The short answer: India (IST, UTC+5:30) is 9.5 hours ahead of US Eastern Time during US daylight saving (10.5 in winter). The easiest time to call India from the US is early morning your time: around 8:00–9:30 AM ET, which is roughly 5:30–7:00 PM in India — the end of the Indian workday, before dinner. From the West Coast, aim for 6:30–8:00 AM PT (about 7:00–8:30 PM in India).

India and the United States sit almost exactly half a world apart, so there is no time that is mid-afternoon in both places. The good news is that the same offset that makes daytime-to-daytime calls impossible makes your morning to India's evening a reliable, comfortable window.

How far ahead is India?

India keeps a single time zone, India Standard Time, at UTC+5:30, and it does not change for daylight saving. The US does, so the gap depends on the season and which US coast you are on.

The best windows to call

Because India is ahead, your morning is their evening. Aim for the end of the Indian working day (around 5–8 PM IST), which is early morning for you and still a sociable hour in India.

US East Coast (ET)8:00–9:30 AM5:30–7:00 PM
US Central (CT)7:00–8:30 AM5:30–7:00 PM
US Mountain (MT)6:30–8:00 AM6:00–7:30 PM
US Pacific (PT)6:30–8:00 AM7:00–8:30 PM

These windows use US daylight saving (mid-March to early November). In US winter, the same India evening shifts one hour later in your morning.

For a business call vs a personal call

For a work call, the cleanest overlap is your early morning against India's early evening: it catches colleagues before they wrap up. If your Indian team starts early, you can also reach them at the very end of your previous workday (late afternoon ET is mid-evening IST, which is fine for a quick sync but past business hours).

For a personal call to family, the same morning-to-evening window is ideal: 8 AM your time is a relaxed after-work hour in India, before it gets too late.

Watch the US clock changes

India never changes its clocks, but the US springs forward in March and falls back in November, so the gap moves by an hour. A recurring call set in summer will land an hour off in winter unless you adjust it. See our DST 2026 dates.

Stop checking this every time

If you call or meet India regularly, doing this arithmetic by hand gets old fast, and it's exactly where the daylight-saving mistakes creep in. Atlas keeps India and your own city side by side in your Mac menu bar, shades the hours when both sides are awake, and writes any meeting to your calendar in both local times. One glance tells you whether now is a good time to call.
