Time Zone Guides

Best time to call India from the USA

India is half a day ahead of the US, so the trick is simple: call early in your morning and you'll catch India in the evening. Here are the exact windows for the East, Central and West coasts, plus the daylight-saving catch.

The short answer: India (IST, UTC+5:30) is 9.5 hours ahead of US Eastern Time during US daylight saving (10.5 in winter). The easiest time to call India from the US is early morning your time: around 8:00–9:30 AM ET, which is roughly 5:30–7:00 PM in India - the end of the Indian workday, before dinner. From the West Coast, aim for 6:30–8:00 AM PT (about 7:00–8:30 PM in India).

India and the United States sit almost exactly half a world apart, so there is no time that is mid-afternoon in both places. The good news is that the same offset that makes daytime-to-daytime calls impossible makes your morning to India's evening a reliable, comfortable window.

How far ahead is India?

India keeps a single time zone, India Standard Time, at UTC+5:30, and it does not change for daylight saving. The US does, so the gap depends on the season and which US coast you are on.

Pacific (PT)12.5 hours13.5 hours

The best windows to call

Because India is ahead, your morning is their evening. Aim for the end of the Indian working day (around 5–8 PM IST), which is early morning for you and still a sociable hour in India.

Calling fromCall at (your time)In India (IST)
US East Coast (ET)8:00–9:30 AM5:30–7:00 PM
US Central (CT)7:00–8:30 AM5:30–7:00 PM
US Mountain (MT)6:30–8:00 AM6:00–7:30 PM
US Pacific (PT)6:30–8:00 AM7:00–8:30 PM

These windows use US daylight saving (mid-March to early November). In US winter, the same India evening shifts one hour later in your morning.

For a business call vs a personal call

For a work call, the cleanest overlap is your early morning against India's early evening: it catches colleagues before they wrap up. If your Indian team starts early, you can also reach them at the very end of your previous workday (late afternoon ET is mid-evening IST, which is fine for a quick sync but past business hours).

For a personal call to family, the same morning-to-evening window is ideal: 8 AM your time is a relaxed after-work hour in India, before it gets too late.

The date your call moves in 2026

India never changes its clocks, so only the US side moves. The US falls back on 1 November: Friday 30 October at 8:00 AM ET is 5:30 PM in India, and Monday 2 November at the same 8:00 AM ET is 6:30 PM. A recurring invite set before 1 November needs to move an hour earlier on the US side to keep the same Indian evening. See our DST 2026 dates.

Which day is it in India when you call?

The gap is more than half a day, so a call late in your day lands on the next date in India. That matters most on Fridays, because the next date is a Saturday. Here is the same Friday in US summer, with an East Coast caller:

You call (ET)It is in India (IST)
Friday 8:00 AM5:30 PM Friday
Friday 12:00 PM9:30 PM Friday
Friday 6:00 PM3:30 AM Saturday
Friday 9:00 PM6:30 AM Saturday

So a Friday afternoon call to India is a Friday-night call for them, and anything after about 2:30 PM Eastern lands past midnight on Saturday. If the matter can wait, a Friday morning call from you is the last comfortable one of the week.

When the evening window closes

The window above assumes an ordinary working day in India. On a public holiday it can close or move. India has three national holidays that fall on the same date every year, and in 2026 they land on Monday 26 January (Republic Day), Saturday 15 August (Independence Day) and Friday 2 October (Gandhi Jayanti). Holi, Diwali and the other festivals move each year, and the dates differ by state. The central government publishes its list on the National Portal of India holiday calendar; check it for the week you plan to call, and for your contact's own state.

Stop checking this every time

If you call or meet India regularly, doing this arithmetic by hand gets old fast, and it's exactly where the daylight-saving mistakes creep in. Atlas keeps India and your own city side by side in your Mac menu bar, shades the hours when both sides are awake, and writes any meeting to your calendar in both local times. One glance tells you whether now is a good time to call.
