About
Yaak is an API client from Greg Schier, who created Insomnia and sold it in 2019, then returned to build the tool he actually wanted. It sends HTTP, GraphQL, gRPC, WebSocket and server-sent event requests, and its defining stance is local-first: no account, no cloud sync, every workspace stored as plain text files that sit happily in Git. Secrets are encrypted with ChaCha20-Poly1305, requests chain together for multi-step flows, and collections import cleanly from Postman, Insomnia, OpenAPI and Swagger.
Launched in January 2024 and open source under the MIT licence, Yaak has become the credible successor to the incumbents in 2026, with version 2026.4 adding folder-level settings overrides and cookie editing, plus a CLI built for coding agents. It is free for personal use; commercial use costs $79 per year or $349 lifetime.
