The short version
- No accounts.
Mac Dept. has nothing to sign into, and nothing to sign up for.
- No purchases here.
Every price shown is informational. Buying or downloading an app happens on that developer's own site, never on Mac Dept.
- No cookies, no fingerprinting.
Umami, which we self-host on our own server, counts visits without identifying you, and sets no cookies.
- Nothing stored from browsing.
We build no profile of you and hold no personal data just because you read a page here.
- The only data we ever see
is an email you choose to send us yourself, through Submit an App or a direct message.
Who publishes Mac Dept.?
Mac Dept. is published by:
Theodore HQ
c/o Fairway House, Links Business, Fortran Rd, St Mellons, Cardiff CF3 0LT, United Kingdom
Email: support@theodorehq.com
Given the small scale and low-risk nature of what we process, a dedicated Data Protection Officer has not been appointed. Any privacy question reaches the same inbox above.
What this site does not do
- No account system. There is no login, no password and nothing to reset.
- No checkout or payment processor. Mac Dept. does not sell anything. Prices shown for each app are for reference, sourced from the developer's own site, and any purchase happens there, under that developer's own terms.
- No newsletter. We do not collect an email address unless you type one into your own mail app to submit an app or contact us directly.
Submitting an app
The Submit an App page builds a pre-filled email in your own mail app when you press send. The app name, URL, pitch and your email address only leave your device if you actually send that email, and it goes straight to support@theodorehq.com. We keep submission emails for as long as it takes to review them, generally no more than two years, then delete them.
Website analytics
To understand which pages people find useful, Mac Dept. uses Umami, a privacy-friendly analytics tool we self-host on our own server at analytics.theodorehq.com.
Umami records aggregate, non-identifying information: the page URL, title and referrer, the country your visit came from (derived from your IP address, which is then immediately discarded and never stored), and your browser, operating system, device type and screen size. It sets no cookies, does not fingerprint your device, does not follow you across other websites, and shares nothing with any third party. We cannot identify you from it.
Lawful basis: under PECR (as amended by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025), this aggregate, cookieless analytics falls within the "statistical purposes" exception, which requires us to tell you about it and to give you a simple, free way to opt out (both done here). The brief processing of your IP address to derive a country relies on our legitimate interests (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(f)) in understanding aggregate traffic without identifying you. Retention: aggregate figures indefinitely; raw event records for twelve months.
To opt out, use the button below (it saves a small flag that tells Umami to ignore this browser on this site permanently). Any standard content blocker (uBlock Origin, Ghostery, Brave's shields) also blocks it automatically.
Third-party apps and links
Mac Dept. is a directory: every app listed links out to that app's own website, App Store listing or download page. Once you follow one of those links, that developer's own privacy policy applies, and we have no visibility into, and no control over, what they collect. We link only to apps we consider well made and actively maintained, but we are not responsible for their data practices; check each developer's own policy before installing or buying anything.
Hosting and international transfers
We keep suppliers to a minimum. Where one is based outside the UK, an approved transfer safeguard applies:
- Vercel (United States) hosts this website. Vercel is certified under the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
- Umami (website analytics): self-hosted on a server we control, so your analytics data is never transferred to a third-party analytics company.
- Apple iCloud runs our support@theodorehq.com mailbox. For UK and EU users this is controlled by Apple Distribution International Limited in Ireland, within the EEA.
Your rights under UK GDPR
Because we hold so little personal data, most of these rights apply only to a message you have chosen to send us, but they remain available in full:
- Access. Ask for a copy of any data we hold about you (Art 15).
- Rectification. Ask us to correct anything inaccurate (Art 16).
- Erasure. Ask us to delete an email or message you sent us (Art 17).
- Restriction. Ask us to pause processing while a dispute is resolved (Art 18).
- Portability. Ask to receive your data in a structured, common format (Art 20).
- Object. Object to any processing we base on legitimate interests (Art 21).
- No automated decisions. We make none about you (Art 22).
To exercise any of these, email support@theodorehq.com. We respond within thirty days, free of charge.
Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal data, you have the right to complain to us directly. The easiest way is to email support@theodorehq.com. We will acknowledge your complaint within 30 days, look into it, and tell you the outcome.
You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO): Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF. Helpline: 0303 123 1113. ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint. You can contact the ICO at any time, though we would appreciate the chance to resolve things for you first.
Children
Mac Dept. is a general-audience directory of Mac software and is not directed at children under 13, the UK age of digital consent under section 9 of the Data Protection Act 2018. We do not knowingly collect any personal data from anyone under that age.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page.
