Tot

About

Tot gives you exactly seven notes, each a colour-coded dot, and that constraint is the whole idea: it is a tiny holding pen for the text you juggle all day, not another archive to maintain. Phone numbers, snippets, half-written replies and stray to-dos live in dots that sync over iCloud between Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, always a click or a keystroke away in the menu bar.

Tot 2, released in August 2025, added custom smart bullets, text dividers, automatic indenting and automatic backups, and moved to a free-to-try model: the full Mac version is a one-time $19.99 unlock, with no subscription. The Iconfactory has been making Apple software since 1996, and that experience shows in every pixel of this one.

Pick Antinote if you want a Mac-only scratchpad for less: it costs $5 once with lifetime updates, has a free trial, and needs macOS 14 or later.

• Stickies

Stay with Stickies if built in and free is enough: it keeps notes, lists and pictures on your desktop, floats a note on top of other windows and exports text files.

• Notes

Stay with Notes if you want one free app for quick text and longer notes: it is built into every Mac, and you can add photos, files and drawings to a note.
