PST to IST converter

India is half a day ahead of the US West Coast, so converting between Pacific time and Indian time means flipping morning to evening. Here are the exact offsets and worked conversions, plus the daylight-saving catch.

The short answer: India Standard Time (IST, UTC+5:30) is 13.5 hours ahead of US Pacific Standard Time (PST), and 12.5 hours ahead of Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) in US summer. So 9:00 AM PST = 10:30 PM IST (and 9:00 AM PDT = 9:30 PM IST). The only realistic shared window is your early morning, which is India's evening.

The US West Coast and India sit almost exactly half a world apart, so there is no hour that is daytime in both places. The same wide offset that rules out daytime-to-daytime calls makes your morning to India's evening the one comfortable window worth knowing.

How far ahead is IST of PST?

India keeps a single time zone, India Standard Time, at UTC+5:30, and it never changes for daylight saving. The US West Coast does, switching between PST (UTC−8) in winter and PDT (UTC−7) in summer. That makes the gap season-dependent.

US Pacific clockUTC offsetIST is ahead by
PST (US winter)UTC−813.5 hours
PDT (US summer)UTC−712.5 hours

India observes neither change, so the only thing moving is the US clock. When the West Coast springs forward in March, the gap shrinks by an hour; when it falls back in November, the gap widens again.

PST to IST: worked conversions

Add 13.5 hours to a PST time to get IST (and roll the date forward where it crosses midnight). For US summer, add 12.5 hours to PDT instead. The table below uses winter PST.

Time in PSTTime in ISTTime in IST (summer, PDT)
9:00 AM10:30 PM9:30 PM

5:00 PM6:30 AM (next day)5:30 AM (next day)
7:00 AM8:30 PM7:30 PM

The pattern is clear: a normal Pacific workday lands in India's late evening and overnight. The one reliable overlap is your early morning against India's evening, around the end of the Indian working day.

Watch the US clock changes

India never changes its clocks, but US Pacific springs forward in March and falls back in November, so the gap moves between 13.5 and 12.5 hours. A recurring call set in winter will land an hour off in summer unless you adjust it. See what PST is and what IST is.

Stop converting this by hand

If you work with India from the US West Coast regularly, this arithmetic gets old fast, and the 13.5-versus-12.5-hour swing is exactly where daylight-saving mistakes creep in. Atlas keeps Pacific time and India side by side in your Mac menu bar, shades the hours when both sides are awake, and writes any meeting to your calendar in both local times. One glance tells you the conversion.

Frequently asked

How many hours ahead is IST of PST?
India Standard Time (IST, UTC+5:30) is 13.5 hours ahead of US Pacific Standard Time (PST). In US summer, when the West Coast is on Pacific Daylight Time (PDT), the gap narrows to 12.5 hours, because India does not observe daylight saving but the US does.
What is 9 AM PST in IST?
9:00 AM PST is 10:30 PM IST. In US summer, 9:00 AM PDT is 9:30 PM IST. The same morning hour on the US West Coast always lands in the late evening in India.
Does India observe daylight saving time?
No. India stays on IST (UTC+5:30) year-round. Because the US changes its clocks, the gap between IST and US Pacific moves between 13.5 hours in US winter (PST) and 12.5 hours in US summer (PDT).
