Why your Mac's volume slider does nothing to a USB DAC

Moving the Mac's volume slider or pressing the volume keys does nothing to your USB DAC. Here's when that's by design, and when it's actually fixable.

Most of the time, a USB DAC that ignores your Mac's volume slider is doing exactly what it was built to do. Plenty of DACs output a fixed line-level signal on purpose, meant to be set once and left alone, with volume handled by a knob on the DAC itself or an amplifier downstream.

That covers the majority of cases, but not all of them. Some DACs genuinely do accept software volume control and still don't respond, usually because the app playing audio is sending it at a fixed level that leaves the slider with nothing to attenuate. Below is how to tell which situation you're in, and what to do about each one.

Is your DAC even supposed to have a variable output?

Check the DAC's manual or spec sheet before touching anything in macOS. Manufacturers usually say outright whether a unit is "fixed output" or "variable output" (sometimes written as "hardware volume control"). A DAC with a physical volume knob on the front, or one designed to feed a separate amplifier or preamp, is almost always fixed output by design. The knob, or the downstream amp, is the only volume control that exists for that signal path.

There's a real engineering reason many hi-fi DACs are built this way. Attenuating volume in the digital domain, before the signal reaches the DAC chip, reduces the effective bit depth of the audio: turn a 16-bit stream down by even a few decibels digitally and you throw away resolution you paid for. DACs aimed at accuracy skip that step and leave volume to an analogue stage further down the chain instead. If your DAC works this way, no software, including Chorus, can add a volume control to it: macOS has nothing to send a volume instruction to, because the device was never built to receive one.

Why does the slider do nothing even though my DAC supports software volume?

If the DAC's own documentation says it does accept a software volume, the usual cause is the app, not the device. Some pro audio software and any playback using exclusive mode (sometimes labelled "hog mode" or bit-perfect output) sends audio straight to the hardware at full, unattenuated digital level on purpose, to keep any processing off the signal before it reaches the DAC. That's a real feature for bit-perfect playback, but it leaves the system volume slider with nothing left to scale. Turning it down in that state either does nothing, or drops the signal by a fixed digital step rather than a smooth range.

Check which app you were using when this happened. If it's a DAW, a bit-perfect player, or anything with its own "exclusive mode" or "hardware volume" setting, that setting is usually where the fix is, not System Settings.

Check Audio MIDI Setup's own Output tab for the DAC

Open Audio MIDI Setup (in Applications › Utilities), select your DAC in the sidebar, and look at its Output tab. Some DACs expose a native hardware volume slider there, entirely separate from the system volume in the menu bar, and macOS doesn't always surface it anywhere else. If a slider appears there and moving it changes the level, that's your DAC's real volume control, and the menu bar one simply isn't wired to it.

Look for a manufacturer control panel

Many DACs, especially ones aimed at desktop or studio use, ship their own control panel application rather than relying on macOS's built-in volume system at all. If your DAC's manufacturer provides a utility like this, it's usually the correct place to set volume, balance, and output mode, and it's worth installing even if you never touch anything else in it. Check the product page or support section on the manufacturer's website for a Mac control panel download specific to your model.

A stuck or outdated driver is a less common but real cause

If the DAC advertises variable, software-controlled volume, none of the above shows a working control, and everything looks correctly wired, an outdated or corrupted driver is worth ruling out. This is less common than the two causes above, but it does happen, particularly after a macOS update. Check the manufacturer's site for a firmware or driver update matched to your exact model, reinstall it, and restart before testing volume again.

Where Chorus fits in, and where it doesn't

Chorus can't give a fixed-output DAC a volume control it wasn't built to have. That's a hardware decision, and no app on macOS, Chorus included, can override it. If your manual says fixed output, the knob or the downstream amp is the only volume you're going to get, and that's by design rather than a fault.

Where Chorus is genuinely useful is once your DAC does have a real system volume, whether that was true from the start or you've just fixed the app that was bypassing it. Chorus routes individual apps to individual outputs, so you can send only the apps you want, say a music player or a DAW, through the DAC at that volume, while calls, notifications, and everything else play through your Mac's built-in speakers or another device instead. A keyboard shortcut bound to the DAC also means switching it in and out of use takes one keypress rather than a trip through Sound settings each time.
