Can a Mac fill every room in your house with music?

Yes, a Mac can send one audio stream to speakers in every room at once. Here's how that works, what it can't do, and the free way to try it.

Yes: a Mac can send the same audio to every room in the house at once, using macOS's own output-grouping tool, the same mechanism a dedicated app like Chorus builds on. Built-in speakers, wired speakers, AirPlay speakers, and Bluetooth speakers can all be combined into one group and played together.

This is not a hidden feature Apple built specifically for whole-home listening. It is the same output-grouping capability that lets you combine two speakers into a stereo pair or run a pair of Studio Displays as one output, pointed at every kind of output the Mac can reach at once. Here is what that combination can actually do, where it runs into real limits, and where the free route stops being worth the hassle.

Which speakers can actually play together?

Any output the Mac already talks to on its own can join the same group: the Mac's built-in speakers, anything wired into its headphone jack or a USB or Thunderbolt interface, AirPlay speakers already on the same Wi-Fi network (a HomePod, an AirPlay-enabled soundbar, an Apple TV feeding a room's speakers), and Bluetooth speakers already paired to the Mac. Tick the ones you want, in Audio MIDI Setup or in a grouping app, and the same audio stream goes to all of them at the same moment, whatever mix of connection types they use.

Is this the same as a system like Sonos?

No, and the difference matters if you are deciding between the two. In a system built for whole-home audio, the speakers talk to each other directly over the network once the source device has told them what to play, so the phone or laptop that started the music does not need to stay involved. A Mac-based group works the other way round: the Mac decodes the audio itself and pushes it out to every device in the group. It is the hub for as long as the group is playing, not just the device that pressed play, and that single difference explains most of the limits below.

What happens if the Mac sleeps or leaves the room?

The audio stops. If the Mac goes to sleep, a laptop's lid closes without an external display keeping it awake, or the Mac moves out of Wi-Fi or Bluetooth range of a speaker in the group, that speaker stops receiving anything. Range depends on which connection each speaker uses: AirPlay rides on the Wi-Fi network, so it really comes down to Wi-Fi coverage in that room, while Bluetooth is shorter-range, typically reliable to about 10 metres before walls and interference start to matter. None of this is a fault. It is the direct consequence of the Mac being the source rather than a bystander.

Where does Chorus fit in?

Chorus groups outputs using the same Multi-Output Device mechanism macOS already provides, so it is not a replacement for what the Mac can do, it is the same feature with the rough edges worked on.
