Why does AirPlay audio from my Mac keep cutting out?

AirPlay runs over Wi-Fi, not Bluetooth, so a dropout is a network issue. Five real causes, from channel congestion to blocked Bonjour.

AirPlay audio cuts out because AirPlay streams over Wi-Fi, the local network, rather than a direct Bluetooth radio link, so the causes are network problems: Wi-Fi congestion, the Mac's Wi-Fi radio saving power, blocked Bonjour/mDNS discovery, or the overhead of playing to more than one speaker at once.

None of that overlaps much with why a Bluetooth speaker drops. Work through the causes below in order, since the first two account for most reported dropouts, and the last two are worth checking before assuming your network is fine.

Why is AirPlay different from a Bluetooth dropout?

Bluetooth connects two devices directly: your Mac and the speaker talk to each other over a short-range radio link, with nothing else routing the signal. AirPlay does not work that way. It sends audio as network traffic, over your Wi-Fi, through your router, to whichever HomePod, AirPlay-capable speaker, or AirPlay-capable TV or receiver you picked. The router does the actual carrying, not a direct link between the two devices.

That single difference is why the usual Bluetooth advice, forgetting a pairing, resetting a Bluetooth module, doesn't apply here. AirPlay has no pairing cache to corrupt. If it drops, something on the network path between the Mac and the speaker faltered, not the AirPlay connection itself.

Is Wi-Fi congestion causing the dropouts?

This is the leading cause. AirPlay needs a steady stream of data to arrive on time, and a busy Wi-Fi channel makes that unreliable rather than impossible, which is exactly what a stutter or a drop looks like. The 2.4GHz band is the more crowded of the two most Macs can use: it has only three non-overlapping channels in common use (1, 6, and 11), so in a block of flats, a shared office, or anywhere several networks overlap, those three channels get contested by everyone nearby.

Where the router and the AirPlay device both support it, moving the network, or at least the AirPlay device, onto the 5GHz band is a real fix, not a placebo. 5GHz offers far more non-overlapping channels and is used by fewer neighbouring networks in most areas. Some routers broadcast one combined network name and pick a band automatically; check the router's app or admin page for a separate 5GHz network if dropouts persist.

The Mac's Wi-Fi radio going into power-saving mode

Macs reduce Wi-Fi radio activity to save power, and that's more aggressive on a laptop running on battery, or on any Mac after a period without network activity, than on a desktop that stays on mains power with Wi-Fi permanently active. AirPlay needs the radio ready at short, regular intervals to keep the stream in sync, and a radio that has stepped down into a lower-power state can miss that window, producing exactly the kind of brief stutter or drop people report. If dropouts happen more on battery, or after the Mac has sat idle before playback starts, the radio's power state is a likely factor, separate from the network's own congestion.

Is your router blocking Bonjour and mDNS?

AirPlay finds devices on your network using Bonjour, Apple's implementation of mDNS (multicast DNS), a discovery protocol that lets devices announce themselves to each other on the local network without a central server. Some routers, particularly mesh Wi-Fi systems and some ISP-provided routers, block or throttle this traffic by default, through a firewall rule or a security setting usually labelled "AP isolation" or "client isolation", a feature meant to stop devices on the same network seeing each other.

When mDNS is blocked outright, AirPlay devices simply don't show up in the Sound menu at all. When it's only throttled, rather than blocked, the more confusing symptom shows up: the speaker is found and plays for a while, then drops as the discovery traffic that keeps the connection alive gets delayed or dropped intermittently. If AP isolation is enabled on your router or mesh system's settings and you don't have a specific reason for it, turning it off is worth trying.

Playing to more than one AirPlay speaker at once

Grouping speakers, playing the same audio to two or more AirPlay targets simultaneously, adds synchronisation overhead that a single target doesn't have. Each speaker in the group has to receive its stream and stay in time with the others, which means more sustained network traffic and more room for one weak link to affect the whole group. A dropout that never happens playing to one HomePod can show up reliably the moment a second one joins, a strong sign the group's overhead, not a fault with any single speaker, is the cause.

What Chorus does, and does not, fix here

Chorus cannot fix an AirPlay dropout. Wi-Fi congestion, a Mac's power-saving radio state, blocked Bonjour/mDNS, and grouped-speaker overhead are all network-layer problems, and no app sitting above macOS's network stack can reach down and correct them. If AirPlay keeps cutting out, the causes above are where the fix lives.

Where Chorus is honestly useful is managing the disruption while a dropout happens.
